How to use essential oils safely
Essential oils are concentrated and should be used with caution.
All most all essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil, lotion, bath oil or shower gel before use on the skin.
Do not apply essential oils directly to the skin and should be kept away from sensitive areas like the eyes. If contact occurs with the eyes, rinse thoroughly with cold water or milk and seek medical advice if needed.
Do not ingest essential oils.
Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
If you are pregnant, suffer from skin condition, epilepsy asthma or taking medications, please seek medical advice.
It is not recommended the use of peppermint oil on children 30 months or under and near the nose of children under 7 years ols. Also it is not recommended to apply eucalyptus oil to or near the face of children under 10 years old.
Photosensitive essential oils are mostly citrus oils but there are others. This mean that if these oils are exposed to UV rays in direct sunlight or from tanning beds, then they react in the body and the immune system creates an allergic reaction which is often severe and damages skin cells. It can be a delayed repsonse but will be a long lasting effect. Some of the photosensitive essential oils are Bergamot, Lime, Lemon, Grapefruit, Bitter Orange and Cumin and blends that have these in.
Storing essential oils.
Essential oils should be stored in a cold, dark place.
They should also be kept in a tightly sealed bottle.
Essential oils are best stored away from direct heat and light, and should be used within 2 years of opening.
As some essential oils are flammable, care should be taken with naked flames.
They can also damage polished, plastic and painted surfaces.
