My 6 favourite Essential Oils
I’ve tried lots of different essential oils over the last 6 years, done alot of research and studying and definately have some favourite essential oils that are my go to’s.
The first essential oil that I came across other than lemon and lavender was Geranium. Even though it is a floral essential oil, which I didn’t think I would like, this one has really stuck with me. I think because it can help with emotions, the mind and anxiety, it triggers something in me that brings my mood up, balances and calms.
Another favourite is Mandarin. I like this essential oil because it’s so refreshing and invigorating and smells like food, haha! It can have a calming effect on the nerves and emotions. It blends with lots of essential oils too.
As someone who has struggled a lot with sinus problems and headaches, Eucalyptus essential oil is another favourite because it is good to clear the airways and is refreshing for headaches and tiredness.
My absolute favourite essential oil is Vetiver. This is one of the later essential oils in my collection but it is one that hit a chord straight from smelling it. I find so relaxing and is quite woody and earthy. I think it is an essential oil that is less common and probably more of a niche market but it has a deep base to it and is very thick viscous consistency.
I have 2 new essential oils that I have more recently come across and have really liked and they are Clary Sage and Myrtle.
Clary Sage, I feel, is a deeper floral scent. Again this essential oil is calming and also can help treat anxiety and hot flushes during the menopause. It can help relax muscles and relieve pain when used in a bath oil or massage oil.
Myrtle is a fresh, uplifting essential oil which, to me, smells similar to eucalyptus but with a sweet scent. It is an antiseptic and astringent and is good used in cleaning as well as help to prevent cramps and aches while preparing for exercise.
Our sense of smell is very powerful and we respond strongly to the limbic brain which is the part of the brain that deals with emotions and memories.
Smells can trigger a feeling, emotion or reaction. When you smell an essential oil, it triggers a response to the limbic brain and so can make you calmer, help with sleep and can trigger a memory, amongst other things, that effect emotions too.
Essential oils are beneficial physically too such as affecting the skin and muscles as certain essential oils can have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
